Discrimination of leaders irk Chadema cadres

THE main opposition party of TANZANIA, CHADEMA, yesterday raised concern over what it described as discrimination of its leaders by the government specifically during national events.

According to some party leaders who have slithered into government positions (mayors and councilors), they are being sidelined and at times denied opportunities to address the public.
Speaking to journalist in Dar es Salaam yesterday, Vice Chairman of Chadema The Greater Dar es Salaam, Bernard Mwakyembe said apart from being denied avenues to speak to the public during events their leaders’ addresses are also not aired by state owned television (TBC).
“There has been similar incidents where Chadema leaders are not even introduced to the public during events. Dar es Salaam City Mayor was not introduced among dignitaries at the recent ceremony inaugurating Nyerere Bridge at Vijibweni,” he said, noting that TBC switched off the live broadcast when the Mayor Issaya Mwita started to address the public.
Mwakyembe blamed the government through the Regional Commissioner’s Office to thwart various efforts of Chadema leaders in implementing various development projects.
He said despite calls by President John Magufuli for Tanzanian’s to unite and work closely regardless of their political affiliation, his subordinates at regional level have openly been discriminating their counterparts from the opposition.
He appealed to the government and whoever responsible to make sure that such incidents do not recur. He said leaders from Chadema were elected by the people and thus they deserve respect and equal treatment as their fellows from the ruling Chama cha Mapinduzi (CCM).
According to Mwakyembe, the party has submitted official complaints on the matter to the Media Council of Tanzania (MCT), TBC and Ministry for Information, Culture, Arts and Sports Development.
Meanwhile, Chadema The Greater Dar es Salaam Secretary Henry Kileo said party leaders are determined to improve the city and welfare of Dar es Salaam residents.
He said they are working on plans to review the contract of the multi-billion Machinga Complex and UDA due to increasing complaints from the public.
Kileo added that President Mgufuli and his government should accept that Dar es Salaam is under Chadema so they should work together to bring development.
He also called on TBC to execute their duties professionally without exhibiting any forms of bias
