Japan lauds new industrial growth drive

The Minister of Industry, Trade and Investment Charles Mwijage told the Chief Representative of Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) in Dar es Salaam yesterday that the issue of differential tax treatments for local and imported goods could soon be realised with an industrial drive.
Mwijage said there are people taking over industries through privatization but their industries were closed, noting that the government was committed to reviving such industries in order to boost jobs and increase tax payments to state coffers.

The country has a cement industry with the capacity to produce 8m tonnes per annum while the consumption level for the whole country still stands at 4m tones,, he said.
This can be changed if the country moves to industrial production more energetically, he emphasized.
JICA chief representative Toshio Nagase welcomed plans enunciated by President John Magufuli for an industrial revolution saying it was crucial for the country’s development to focus on job creation.
Industrial development plans enunciated by the president are intended to help in realizing the country’s Vision 2025, with the new government now developing the 2nd five year development plan (FYDP).
JICA was aligning with the vision and strategy of the government of Tanzania as a long term development partner, putting strong emphasis on industrial development and implementing assistance in a comprehensive way in addition to the KAIZEN project which aims to empower rural dwellers, the representative elaborated.
JICA-Tanzania projects support policy development and business environment transformation through industrial policy advisories and general budget support via the private sector DPO, the loan agreement of which will be signed on Monday.
Former Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Industries and Trade Uledi Mussa said the country is interested to follow Ethiopia's suit in implementing the principles of Kaizen.
The government drew important lessons from the implementation of Kaizen in Ethiopia, he affirmed.
Joint engagements of the government and people of Ethiopia in the successful implementation of Kaizen philosophy there is something that the government wishes to see how it can be applied in the country, he added.
