US agency hails ethical governance awareness in country

THE United States Agency for International Development (USAID) has commended Tanzanians for becoming much more aware about ethical governance issues in different sectors.

DR. AZAVELI LWAITAMA...PROVIDED THE KEYNOTE
The Acting Deputy Director for USAID, Helen Pataki, revealed this recently in Dar es Salaam, when addressing a national issue-based dialogue on ethics and public leaders’ accountability organized through Pamoja Twajenga project.
The forum entitled ‘Civic and professional ethics in Tanzania: where are we and where do we want to go?’ was attended by 73 participants from Mtwara, Morogoro, Dodoma, and Iringa regions.
They were drawn from civil society organizations, government, institutions of accountability and citizens including youth, women, and disenfranchised populations.
Pataki said that USAID has seen a high level of citizen awareness and engagement in ethical governance issues for natural resources and land management as well as equitable health services delivery.
She noted that the respective achievements were contributed by the engagement of civil society organizations and the private sector, as they played key roles.
“Now is the time to harness this work and together, discuss the best approach to promoting an even higher level of ethics among the custodians of good governance,” she said.
Participants to the forum came up with action points for the way forward to enhance civic and professional ethics.
Dr. Azaveli Lwaitama provided the keynote focusing on the topic of the day while Dr. John Jingu viewed ‘Institutions of accountability and management of public resources: what are the challenges and opportunities.
Tumaini-Mungu Mosha presenting the topic, ‘participation and civic engagement in public resources management.’
The purpose of the forum was to bring together actors from different sectors that are important to Tanzania’s development, in order to discuss civic and professional ethics and the management of public resources.
However, the forum recommended the need for participation and civic engagement institutions including media to strengthen their resolve to further build on the momentum of responsive and accountable leadership exerted from the pillars of the state.
The issue-based dialogue also promoted the process of encouraging citizens to hold the governments more accountable, resulting in increased responsiveness and transparent public resource management and decision making.
Pamoja Twajenga project seeks to promote innovation and linkages through activities at every opportunity, through introducing new tools and encouraging issue-based partnerships.
